FICCKAE works with 70 different communities, arranging yearly assemblies, as well as general assemblies. The Leadership of the Organization changes every three years, via a democratic election. The president (in Kichwa called “Minaru Apama”) of FICCKAE at present is female: Blanca .

The Kichwa communities cooperating with FICCKAE have the right to participate in assemblies. Decisions are taken very seriously: members have to follow-up decisions and are obliged to respect constitutional human rights. No-compliance will lead to sanctioning measures.

In its work, FICCKAE combines the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources with the engagement for land rights. They support communities in times of social, ecological and economic conflicts, including controversies with mining companies or timber industry. Activities also enhance environmental education as a means to strengthen the conservation of natural assets.

·       Yachaikunamanta Kipi Llannkanmanta

FICCKAE promotes the Kichwa culture by supporting events, workshops and assemblies. Analphabetism is a common issue in the Amazon region; bilingual education projects and analphabetism campaigns strengthen the use of the Kichwa language.

As part of the socio-economic activities, FICCKAE supports the establishment of fair value chains for agricultural products, indigenous art and crafts for the Kichwa families who want to sell their products on the local, national and international markets. Sustainability and the protection of natural resources are important aspects, apart from strengthening the financial independence of the indigenous communities.

Fostering the rights of women and families plays an important role in indigenous communities. Since gender issues and sexism in many communities in Ecuador are a challenge, work in this area is crucial for an equal and peaceful living together. FICCKAE accompanies women in the process of defending their rights, e.g. via the project “Women in Conflict” – a culinary project to enhance self-esteem and peaceful transformation within or between families and communities.

·       Kamachik Kipi Llankanamanta

FICCKAE’s department of socio-cultural and legal aspects, as well as communication supports the communities in conflictive situations, e.g. via mediation, or the strategic use of media. Radio, TV, social networks and print media offer important means of communication. FICCKAE supports the indigenous communities through technological knowledge and trainings, enabling them to fight for their rights. This allows them to have a voice on national and international issues.
